This is a Ship’s Log

I am notorious for not writing on this blog. Sorry.

Star Trek comes up a lot around here. Mainly because we’re nerds but also because… Wait, no. It’s just because we’re nerds.

Of course, there are some flavors of Star Trek nerd in the office. Stephen and Floyd are OG Star Trek dudes and I’m a TNG guy (Picard is pretty rad). Elizabeth is the kind of nerd who wants to pretend like she’s not interested but secretly is and can’t admit Spock is dreamy.

You’re just as likely to hear an existential discussion about the nature of religion as you are a story about Stephen and Floyd visiting the desert where Kirk fought a lizard man.

I bring this up because I think it does point to an underlying principle in our office. See, we dig exploration here. We’re into figuring out new things and occasionally blowing stuff up. And we’re pretty cheesy.

The thing I love the most about this place is we embrace our quirks. You’re just as likely to hear an existential discussion about the nature of religion as you are a story about Stephen and Floyd visiting the Southern Californian desert to visit the place where Kirk fought a lizard man. We know we’re weird and nerdy and obnoxious and we don’t pretend we’re not. It’s kind of refreshing.

Which brings me back to never writing on this blog. See, I haven’t written here much because I didn’t know the purpose of this blog. One way to really drive me crazy is to keep me in the dark on the purpose of things. Much like Picard, I need to know the Why of the thing.

And so Floyd gave me a metaphor to hold on to: This blog is like the ship’s log. It’s a story of this place.

I like that. I like thinking that someday Floyd will be looking back on this and remembering the discussion that led to this blog post. Only I hope he pictures me in the TNG uniform and not the sweater and t-shirt I usually rock. So, hopefully this metaphor will help me be better about writing in this thing.

But, if I don’t, just imagine for my sake that we’re boldly going somewhere cool. Because nine times out of ten we are.
