Growing Pains

I’ve always wanted a garden of my own; and being a new homeowner, I finally have my chance. Why didn’t anyone tell me that growing things outdoors could be so troublesome? It started with the wild onion. It may look harmless, but this stuff is super invasive, spreads like wildfire and is hard to kill. Plus it stinks. I’ve spent many a weekend digging the pesky bulbs out our flowerbeds, but the wild onion lives on.

We have some potted geraniums on our front porch and I believe Evil Squirrel buried a nut in one of them.

My other garden nemesis: the squirrel. We have some potted geraniums on our front porch and I believe Evil Squirrel buried a nut in one of them over the winter, because he keeps coming back to look for it. Walking out my front door in the mornings to a dirt-strewn porch and torn up plants makes me sad.

I’m not sure why Evil Squirrel hates me so. Recently we’ve started to add to the garden and he’s taken to eating my freshly planted flowers. I’m not sure what is so appealing about a gerbera daisy to a squirrel (I thought they ate nuts and seeds exclusively), but he seems to find the flowers offensive (or maybe it’s just me?). Yesterday I bought two rubber snakes from the dollar store and put them in the flower bed – I wonder how long  it will take for him to figure that one out.

I was hoping to start a small vegetable garden in the backyard soon, but with the way things have been going, I’m a little wary. The squirrels in my neighborhood would probably eat my tomatoes, given the chance. I just may have to get Abbey to give them the stinkeye.
